Schmidt Introduces Bill Related to American Centrifuge Project

Congresswoman Jean Schmidt introduced legislation Dec. 20 that would give the U.S. Department of Energy the authority to assess the viability of technologies related to the American Centrifuge project.

The Department of Energy has stated that it wants to move forward on a demonstration of the American Centrifuge project. If built, the American Centrifuge would create nearly 4,000 jobs in Ohio and another 4,000 nationally.

"The American Centrifuge technology is important to the economy of Ohio, our national security, and nonproliferation efforts," said Congresswoman Schmidt, a Clermont County Republican. "I look forward to working with the Department of Energy and my colleagues in the House and Senate to pass this bill.
"As promised, this bill conforms to all House rules," added Congresswoman Schmidt.

The Department of Energy has proposed a $300 million cost-shared effort to demonstrate the viability of the American Centrifuge, for which USEC is seeking a loan guarantee.
